Today, we are reviewing a few of our preferred summer-centric Gardenista stories. Remember this one?
Hydrangeas struggle with the very same image issue as rhododendrons: they are typically in the incorrect location. A pot near your home needs ericaceous soil, an acid mulch, aluminum sulphate. They look constrained, too cool.
Hydrangeas handle a splendor when they have liberty, grown in a location that they in fact like. Along the narrow lanes of Cornwall, at the southwest pointer of England, hydrangeas are the most transcendent of plants. In tones of electrical blue or a strange purple or greenish white, they emerge from the shade of lichen-covered holm oaks, radiant versus slate walls.
States Alasdair Moore of the Duchy Nursery in Lostwithiel: “In Cornwall, hydrangeas have actually made themselves in the house, frequently looking especially wild with their sagging stems packed with flower.”
Here are 7 garden style concepts for wild hydrangeas:

1. Blanket a slope.
Above: At Trematon Castle at the edge of Cornwall, the croquet yard by the home falls away into a jungle of plant. Hydrangeas mature the slope, unsupported, amongst roses and herbs. In a light rain, their mopheads bring the weight.
Cornish “mizzle,” the misty wetness which identifies the seaside weather condition when it is not radiantly bright, improves the impact.
2. Grow a jungle.
Above: At Trematon, house of garden designers Isabel and Julian Bannerman, hydrangeas end up being jungle plants. Here, Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’ is signed up with by the white umbels of Ammi majus, with spires of Echium pininana on the other side of the course.
3. Encroach on a driveway.

Attempt as one might, it’s difficult not to think about the books of Daphne du Maurier when taking a trip in Cornwall, specifically after being lost for what appears like hours. It is the wildness of regular plants that bring the well-known opening line of Rebecca to mind: “Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley once again.”
4. Eliminate gloom.
Above: Untroubled by bluing representatives and soil level of acidity test sets, hydrangeas sparkle in the gloom, in the manner in which rhododendrons can, if they are enabled to.
” A lot of the hydrangeas in Cornwall have a real and accurate local color,” states Alasdair Moore. “Their tones of blue depend on the soil they discover themselves in, level of acidity permitting them to use up aluminum which provides the blueness.”
5. Keep them damp.
Above: Hydrangea paniculata ‘Sundae Fraise’ at the Duchy Nursery in Lostwithiel, Cornwall. Paniculata and arborescens types rely not on level of acidity however wetness: they should never ever dry.
6. Mix and match.
Above: At Botelet Farm once again (which has terrific homes to lease along with a farmhouse bed and breakfast), purple lacecaps grow amongst the blue mopheads. Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Blue Wave’ is a comparable range to this and can be discovered at the Duchy Nursery. It is either blue or purple depending upon the soil.
7. Style for golden.
Above: Back to hyper-reality. “I drove house from a night cricket match last night, down an opportunity of huge, blue macrophylla hydrangeas,” remembers our good friend Alasdair. “Brightened by my headlights versus the night, they looked astonishing. It felt as though I remained in a dream …” We state: Dream on.
